BCYC RYA Training Courses

Watersports at Cheddar Reservoir

BCYC is based at Cheddar Reservoir, and is a recognised Training Centre and Champion Club certified by the Royal Yachting Association, the governing body for sailing in the U.K.

We have a team of RYA qualified Instructors (Dinghy, Windsurf and Powerboat Instructors) which enables our club to offer a variety of taster sessions and training courses for adults and juniors. Training at the club is overseen by the RYA Principal, John Allen, and coordinated by Dinghy Chief Instructor Karen Turner and Powerboat Chief Instructor Charles Richardson.

The courses we offer are:

  • Adult RYA sailing courses – Start Sailing, Level 1; Basic Skills, Level 2
  • Youth RYA sailing courses - Stage 1; Stage 2; Stage 3; Stage 4; Advanced.
  • Pay and Play 1:1 training and taster sessions for adults and juniors, sailing Windsurfing and Stand Up Paddle boards
  • BSUPA ready to ride 2 hr stand up paddle board course
  • Social Sailing and Start Racing Training for adults and juniors - Members Only
  • Junior Club (8-11) and Youth (12+) training and improver sessions Members Only
  • Windsurfing taster and RYA start Windsurfing
  • Powerboat courses – Introduction (Club safety for members) & RYA level 2

Taster Session

RYA Level 1 Courses – Start Sailing - adult
An introduction to the sport covering the minimum knowledge required to get afloat under supervision. The two day RYA courses cost £120 per person for members and £160 for non-members. RYA logbooks included and RYA Start Sailing manual can be purchased for £10.

RYA Sailing Basics (Level 2)
Developing sailing techniques to be able to sail independently. A two or three day course that is scheduled according to demand. Please Register Interest Online and you will be contacted when courses are being scheduled.
Once you have achieved RYA level 2 you can Hire the BCYC Training Boats.Boats are booked online and are available Wed and Friday Evening, Saturday and Sunday:

RYA Courses and 3-day family sessions are run during Summer Holidays.
Parents are encouraged to learn to sail at the same time as their children or help out on and off the water. See online booking for dates and cost for both adult and Junior sailing and Windsurfing courses during July and August

Junior and Youth Sailing for BCYC members
Optimist, Topper and RS Tera dinghies are available for junior and youth members to go sailing.

Friday Night Club - run by parents, supported by RYA Coach. All ages £5 a session payable on the night.

Junior Club (8-11) Starting First Saturday in June These are half day MORNING sessions to introduce youngster to sailing. Parents are encouraged to help out and get involved with the sailing activities. Cost is £40 for the 8 week session.

Youth Sailing (12+) starts on First Sunday in June for eight weeks. These are half day Morning Sessions. Parents encouraged to assist, cost is £40 for the 8 week session.

Older and more experienced sailors can gain their RYA Stage 1-4 qualifications during these sessions or during the summer holiday courses

Adult Improvers, Social Sailing and Start Racing
Held on the second Saturday of each month, the BCYC improvers meet for free coaching and advice from experienced BCYC members, RYA coaches and instructors. These ad hoc sessions vary in size and will focus on all aspects of improving sailing, with the emphasis on having fun and being social on and off the water. BCYC training boats can be hired at a reduced cost for these sessions.

Stand Up Paddleboard
BCYC Offers BSUPA ready to ride two hour course - see website for dates and availability. The SUP can be hired at BCYC for £5 an hour

Use of BCYC hire craft and facilities
BCYC has a fleet of hire craft – sailing dinghies, windsurfers, and stand up paddleboards (SUPs) Adult Members who are RYA Level 2 Qualified can hire the club training sailing dinghies which must booked online and are available Wed and Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday

Other club equipment (Toppers, Optimist, windsurfers, SUPs, wetsuits and buoyancy aids) is available for hire by club members with booking forms in the OOD office.
