SAFETY BOAT TRAINING
Club Safety Boat Training
This course runs on the first Saturday of every month and is aimed at new and existing members. We operate a Rota Duty system and in order to provide adequate safety cover each membership needs to have a minimum of one person qualified through the club safety boat training course. (Unless you are opting for galley duty only).
The course runs from 9am until approximately 4.30pm and will cover Club induction, all the RYA level 1 powerboat syllabus, plus a number of additional exercises which you will find helpful when on duty at the club. Tea and Coffee are provided but you should bring a packed lunch (No galley on Saturdays).
The course is FREE to club members, but if you would like an RYA Powerboat Logbook complete with Level 1 certificate, upon achieving the required standard during the course, there will be £10 charge.
This course is designed for those with no formal powerboat training. It is a great way to meet other members, the instructors are always happy to answer any questions you may have regarding the Club, duties, joining in with racing and other courses available.
As we spend most of the day afloat, please bring appropriate clothing for the weather - Warm waterproofs for the winter, plenty of sun cream in the summer, wet shoes/old trainers and a buoyancy aid (although we can provide one if you do not have your own).
If you already have completed RYA Powerboat 1 or 2 or have considerable powerboat experience, then we also we also run a two hour familiarisation/assessment course which would then be more suitable. This course is also run on the first Saturday of each month and starts at 9am.
Please Note: Club insurance only covers those drivers who have been certified by BCYC as being competent (regardless of qualifications acquired elsewhere). If you have not completed the Club course you are not permitted to drive the safety boats.
RYA Powerboat Level 2
RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course.
This is a two day course run on consecutive Saturdays, and involves both practical and theory sessions. It provides the skills and background knowledge required to be a competent powerboat driver and upon passing you will receive the RYA Inland Level 2 certificate, which covers rules of the road, basic pilotage and navigational skills, tides and the general seamanship needed to keep you and your crew safe. It is suitable for members who have gained level 1 and would like to improve their knowledge of the sport.
